SMART TaG improves the working conditions in the garment sector

The European Commission has commissioned sequa, together with amfori, the Centre for Economic and Social Development of Myanmar (CESD) and the Confederation of Trade Unions of Myanmar (CTUM) to implement the SMART TaG project from May 2019 to April 2022. The aim is to improve the working conditions of garment workers, promote working and environmental standards and reduce violations of workers' rights in the textile and clothing industry.

Despite the economic importance of the textile and garment sector in Myanmar, the working and living conditions of garment workers are still precarious. Through capacity building of producers and relevant stakeholders, the project contributes to improved transparency and compliance with social and environmental standards in Myanmar-based garment factories and textile SMEs. The majority of consumers in Europe receive few information and have a low understanding about the garment supply. The project addresses this issue by providing awareness raising and education to consumers in Europe on sustainable consumption and lifestyle, as well as on production conditions in Myanmar. Governments and economic operators in producer countries are called upon to improve compliance with sustainability standards and to introduce social and environmental legislation and its implementation. The project sets up an interest representation agenda in Europe and Myanmar where environmental and social issues and policies are regularly discussed, to engage in policy work and political work and to advocate more transparency in the garment value chain to reduce social and environmental risks.
