Smart Myanmar Steering Committee meets, discusses project status and cooperation with Myanmar government

article on planningThe Smart Myanmar project Steering Committee met on November 27, 2013 to discuss the current status of the project, plan for future activities, get the maximum benefit out of the expertise of all members of the consortium, and to come out with a concrete cooperation agenda with Myanmar government authorities.

During the meeting, the new Team Leader of SMART Myanmar presented and discussed the activities that were implemented, including those that went well and problems that were encountered. The participants also did a reality check on the objectives, indicators, and results to be produced.

The SMART Myanmar team members also discussed plans and directions for 2014. The Sheffield chamber of commerce gave an overview about the upcoming BMO capacity building activities; the Marketing component was presented by Germanys Confederation of the German Textile and Fashion Industry; How the project plans to make the production of Myanmar Garments more sustainable was presented by the SMART Myanmar Team leader. Cooperation between SMART Myanmar and the SME center of the Ministry of Industry and the Ministry of Labour was discussed and agreed upon. The SME centre offered their assistance regarding a public event to increase awareness about SCP. The Ministry of Labour, Department of Factory control will exchange information on the new OHS law once finalized to inform SMART Myanmar about their work and the legal requirements.

The Steering Committee consists of the consortium leader sequa, the Confederation of the German Textile and Fashion Industry, UKs Sheffield Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Association of Development Financing Institutions in Asia and the Pacific (ADFIAP) of the Phillipines, The Republic of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce & Industry (UMFCCI) and the Myanmar Garment Manufacturers Association (MGMA). The associate partners of the project are Centre for the Promotion of Imports from developing Countries (CBI) (The Netherlands) and Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) (Bangladesh). The EU delegation Myanmar is also a member of the Steering Committee as well as the Ministry of Labour Department Factories and General Labour Law Inspection Department and the Ministry of Industry (General Department of SME Development).
