Smart Myanmar presents CSR tools

INTRODUCING CSR AND ITS BENEFITS FOR MYANMAR BUSINESSES
Yangon, 30 October 2014 –

CSR practices are profitable for Myanmar businesses! This is, in a nutshell, the key message for Myanmar businesses participating in a half-day event conducted by SMART Myanmar – a EU funded project called “SMEs for Environmental Accountability, Responsibility and Transparency” in close cooperation with UMFCCI. The event marks the launch of the CSR campaign initiated by SMART targeting more than 3000 Myanmar businesses. The campaign wishes to raise awareness on the importance of CSR as well as introduce specific tools developed by SMART for this purpose.

Any development focused purely on economic growth is not sustainable. With Myanmar catching up with global trends, the concept of CSR has become highly relevant. CSR is not a philanthropic approach but a strategy to improve internal business processes, communication, worker satisfaction and productivity. Practicing CSR – that is abiding by social and environmental standards – is a useful management strategy and an entry requirement for doing business with many international buyers. Myanmar businesses can learn from practical cases where CSR has already been meaningfully and successfully integrated into other businesses corporate strategies.

The Ambassador of the European Union and distinguished guests from the UMFCCI and Ministry of Industry will open this launch event, followed by Professor Aung Tun Thet, Economic Adviser to President Thein Sein, who will give a keynote speech on responsible business practices in Myanmar. Specific CSR tools will be discussed by Octavio Peralta, Secretary General of ADFIAP, and examples of corporate best practices will be presented by representatives from Unilever and Yathar Cho as they showcase their respective companies’ CSR activities in Myanmar. In addition, a brief panel discussion on how companies can construct a CSR framework in reality will be held with representatives of the UMFCCI, Yoma Bank Group, ADFIAP, the ILO, SMART Myanmar and the ASEAN CSR Network.
